A FUDster is a member of the cryptocurrency community who deliberately uses FUD tactics, that is, the spreading of fear, uncertainty, and doubt (from Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt). Such a person purposefully stirs up negativity around a coin, a project, or the entire market in order to cause anxiety among other holders and push them toward hasty decisions.
A FUDster's tools are varied: exaggerated rumors, selective presentation of negative news, an emphasis on risks without context, predictions of collapse without justification. Sometimes there is calculation behind this: by sowing panic, one can provoke a sell-off and buy the asset cheaper, or, on the contrary, divert attention from a competing project.
How to tell FUD from objective criticism
- FUD plays on emotions and does not rely on verifiable facts.
- Objective criticism provides sources, figures, and the logic of the argument.
- A FUDster usually avoids reasoned dialogue and repeats alarming claims.
