Due to the fact that the first and main cryptocurrency even today is Bitcoin all other cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins. This word arose at a time when Bitcoin had enormous growth and every programmer who saw the possibility of receiving a lot of money with the cryptocurrencies decided to create his own cryptocurrency based on Bitcoin.
